We often refer to colonial ancestors as 'salt of the earth'. But, given the legacy of environmental degradation and cultural violence left by these ancestors, I wonder about whether 'salting the earth' is a more appropriate set of words to describe the impact on this place. In this installation I engraved these words on either side of the vintage salt shaker eliciting ideas of land salination.  The salt and pepper shakers are blackened, with the patina resembling a burnt object. Salt is strewn across the shelf next to them.

This was part of a series of three works presented as a set of three works on shelves made of vintage table legs.
