Salt of the earth or salting the earth?

Land clearing has led to environmental degradation in Australia. In European history salting the earth was what conquerors did to render the land inhospitable for those conquered. In this work for my Master of Fine Arts, I pose the question of whether those of us who are decended from settlers are salt of the earth? Vintage salt and pepper shakers, engraved with text, added patina, salt.
