Nature and island environments in particular, are my source of inspiration. The journey to reach islands and the small worlds that are contained within their shores have always held a fascination for me. As a child I grew up looking out at islands that were just out of reach, mysterious destinations that beckoned, hiding their treasures around corners or over the other side. As an adult I live, work and travel to gain inspiration from islands - whether it be volunteering on a remote lighthouse island, floating down a river in a canoe or working in my studio on Bruny Island.

I love the contained spaces created by islands- both physically and emotionally. Being on an island provides a feeling of separation from life’s ‘clutter’. Time slows down, distractions are minimised and I can achieve a greater focus on my immediate environment. For me the island acts as a magnifier allowing for a closer connection with the detail contained within its natural forms.

The space where the edge meets the sea is a vibrant, ever changing space. Islands foster unique creatures and plants which have evolved in their own minute, contained worlds. My island worlds are both on land and underwater. Wind and wave formed shapes provide an essence of form which I can pare back to create my simple, stylised, contemporary pieces.

I use recurring shapes and textures to reflect the individual organisms which make up a whole unique, miniature environment. The value of these small scenes is often overlooked by a world focused on big scale and complexity.

I make small sculptural, textured works in metal. Most of my work is made of sterling silver with accents of other metals or organic materials. To add colour I use anodized aluminium. The inherent qualities of the material contribute to the final design.

My work is not about big sweeping views. It is the small, often short lived sights that attract me: an orchid emerging from the ground after a heavy rain, a beautiful sea creature washed up after a storm, a wind pruned tree on a cliff top.
