Janine Combes jewellery designer
Nature and island environments in particular, are my sources of inspiration. The journey to reach islands and the small worlds that are contained within their shores have always held a fascination for me.

I love the contained spaces created by islands- both physically and emotionally. Being on an island provides a feeling of separation from life’s ‘clutter’. Time slows down, distractions are minimised. For me the island acts as a magnifier allowing for a closer connection with the detail contained within its natural forms.

I use recurring shapes and textures to reflect the individual organisms which make up a whole unique, miniature environment.

I make small sculptural, textured works in metal. Most of my work is made of sterling silver or recycled copper with accents of other metals or organic materials. To add colour I use 1950's anodized aluminium recycled from old saucepan lids. The inherent qualities of the material contribute to the final design.
